There is a small but nice collection of Hawaiiana books at the condo.  Bonnie and I generally try to add to the collection every time we are there. I love books. Real books that you hold in your hand and see, touch and smell.  Not the computer tablet e-books.

Often our visits include a nice trip to Hilo to see our daughter. A stop at Volcano Park art gallery is a must. The collection of Hawaiiana books at Volcano Art Gallery is just great. For example I picked up a copy of ‘The Hawaiian Calabash’. I must have gotten one of the last copies as it is now out of print.

This scholarly book talks about the history of this important object for early Hawaiin culture. The calabash (a gourd) was useful for storage of foods and liquids. It also was made into the instrument used for chants called the Ipu. Amazingly native calabashes became extinct and now gourds for Hawaiians come from California. When Bonnie and I were recently at the condo (Kona Coast Unit 7-106) we added to the art collection in the condo. We have an eclectic collection and to it we added another piece of Chinese art. While in the Chinese city of Xi’an in October we visited a famous pagoda called the ‘Big Goose Pagoda’. That visit is a story in itself, but while at the pagoda we purchased an impressive original watercolor of a bamboo tree. We hung this in the master bath which has a kind of bamboo theme. Indeed bamboo is lovely and so tropical. We really enjoy getting up in the moring and enjoying the sun that streams into the bath, now made more enjoyable by this new painting.
