Kona Hawaii Travel Guide

go! Airlines takes you to the city of Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. Kona is the place to go for adventure. A Kona vacation is one full of snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, volcanoes, Scuba diving, underwater submarine tours, and hiking through lush rainforests. With go!’s affordable airfare, you can even go to the Big Island for the afternoon just to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you are a golfer, you can play a round on one of over 20 world-class, jaw-dropping courses on the Kohala Coast or the Kona Country Club.

If adventure is not what you have in mind, make Kona your romantic getaway. You can stay at one of my oceanfront units at the Kanaloa-at-Kona (see below) and then take a driving tour to the majestic surroundings of Rainbow Falls. See for yourself why so many artists find the island seductive and inspiring. Visit one of the many galleries, museums, or theaters and experience the Big Island’s beauty through its local art.

Sledding in Hawaii?

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Yes, that’s right- it’s called Holua, the ancient Hawaiian art of sledding!

Holua was a popular sport and spiritual rite in Hawaii for many centuries before being outlawed by missionaries in the 1825.  Islanders constructed stone ramps — some over a mile long — on steep hillsides, before hurling themselves down the slides on 12-foot-long by six-inch-wide sleds made of uhi uhi or mamane wood and lashed together with olona fibers.  They usually did not come to a stop until they reached the shoreline.  According to sources, they could get up to 50 miles an hour!

The Big Island has over 69 slides, including an elaborate 1.2 mile course in Keauhou called the Royal Holua Slide located just above Kanaloa-at-Kona Resort and can still be viewed from the Kona Country Club Championship Golf Course!  The slide was used for the sport of holua (sledding) as well as to transport canoe hulls down to the bay for final carving and finishing. The slide is accessible by foot from Ali’i Drive opposite the golf clubhouse entrance.

Check out this footprint in time by day and then come home to one of my  oceanfront units at Kanaloa-at-Kona where you can experience a golden sunset, feel the warm Kona trades and sip a cold, flavorful Mai Tai on the lanai.

I’ve got 2 oceanfront units that I am offering at unprecedented prices; unit 3702 – 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom (sleeps 6), A/C, furnished with all the amenities you could imagine and unit 3403 – 1 bedroom / 2 bathroom (sleeps 4) – all amenities!!  The resort offers championship golf minutes away, gated security, 3 pools, hot tubs, night-lighted tennis courts, free WI-FI, barbeques, parking….etc.

Keauhou Canoe Club Recreational Paddling Program

Keauhou Canoe Club (KCC) whose name means “a new beginning” is located at Keauhou Bay (which is about 2 minutes from Kanaloa-at-Kona).   The club was founded in 1980 as Kauikeaouli Canoe Club, named for the birthname of Kamehameha III who was born on the site.

KCC has the strongest recreational program in the State of Hawai’i.  They also enthusiastically volunteer their support for diverse local community causes including Ironman, Ultraman, GEMS, as well as for KCC sponsored races and other club activities.

Recreational paddler & beginners are invited to paddle at the newly established 9AM paddle on Tuesday and Thursdays. This ‘paddle’ will be especially for people who may not want a full hour of on water experience.

I highly recommend this activity to put on the top of your Big Island “to do” list, especially now during the Humpback Whale season.  You’re sure to develop incredible connections with the people, the land and the ocean.

My two oceanfront vacation rental units are just minutes from Keauhou Bay.
