Kauai by Horseback

Kauai is often referred to as The Garden Isle and is considered to be one of the most beautiful parts of the island, but few people who take the traditional, packaged vacation route ever get to see its true beauty. Experienced visitors know that here, independent travel is the only way to go. Comfortable Kauai vacation condos are easy to find, top quality restaurants offer plenty of delicious local food, and transport is easy to arrange. If you want to see the best of what Kauai has to offer, though, you’ll shun the cars, the ATVs, and even the bikes, and you’ll make your journeys by horseback.

Given the rugged terrain of Kauai’s interior, horses are not only the best way to travel - they’re often the only way. Though there are also gentle trails available for less experienced riders, those with an appetite for adventure will be eager to explore the richly forested slopes of the island’s central volcano. There are also some spectacular cliff top trails which will take you along the edges of ravines thousands of feet deep, past freshwater lagoons and out along the edge of the ocean, where you can see nothing but water stretching thousands of miles into the distance under clear blue skies.

Kauai has several different riding academies where you can hire horses to explore on your own or participate in organised tours. The latter can be an excellent way to discover hidden features of the island such as the heiau, or holy sites. Lessons are also available for those trying horse riding for the first time, and there are even opportunities fr small children to ride horses of their own.

Riding out through the island’s wild places, buffeted by the trade winds, under the big open sky, has to be the best way to encounter Kauai. It’s certainly a good way to wear yourself out! After a long ride and a good meal, you’ll be glad to return to your Kauai vacation condo, there to get a good night’s sleep before beginning the next day’s adventures.
