Three Top Reasons to Visit Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach is a popular destination for those visiting Hawaii. Like most of Hawaii, Kailua has a rich history. It was once the ancient capital of Oahu’s kings before the arrival of Captain Cook. This lush landscape was previously used as farmland for growing sugar cane and grazing cattle. Today, it still attracts visitors by the droves.
Water Fun at Kailua Beach
The beach at Kailua is consistently ranked among the world’s top beaches. The gentle waves and warm trade winds found at Kailua beach make windsurfing, sailing, kite boarding, bodysurfing, board surfing, and swimming popular attractions for local residents and tourists alike.
People Watching at Kailua Beach
Celebrities, tourists, wildlife, and local residents visit Kailua beach on any given day. One of the greatest attractions of Kailua beach is the spectacular people watching opportunities. Presidential hopeful, Barack Obama recently vacationed on the shores of Kailua beach in early August of 2008. The popular television series, Lost, is filmed along the Kailua beach as well, and its cast and crew are often seen in the area.
A celebrity of another kind, a monk seal affectionately named Chester, took up residence on the Kailua shores this years as well. The area was cordoned off with tape to allow the special seal some privacy and breathing room during his visit.
The spectacular conditions at Kailua beach attract professional windsurfers and those who enjoy watching professional water sports. The beach is wheelchair accessible, allowing even less mobile visitors to enjoy the beach activities.
Special Considerations When Visiting Kailua Beach
The beach is crescent shaped with soft, blowing white sands. The beach itself is about two miles long and the width varies from between 50 and 150 feet in places. The soft, gently sloping ocean bottom ensures small waves and an easy entry into the ocean waters.
Kailua beach is staffed with trained, paid lifeguards year-round. Showers, restrooms, public phones, and picnic areas are available on the beach. There is also a concession stand available near the parking lot off of Kailua Road. The concession stand offers refreshments, rental wheelchairs, and rental beach equipment.
Kailua beach has a pond-like area where the water encroaches on the beach, creating a shallow semi-circle of ocean water. This area is a popular area for children to play.
However, parents still need to keep a close watch on children playing in the shallow water to prevent accidents. Stinging jellyfish are known to wash up in this area. In fact, Hawaii has experienced a record number of jellyfish stings this year.
Kailua beach is a family-friendly destination for many. This near-perfect beach is a fine example of the tropical paradise setting found only in Hawaii.
