Six Must-See Activities on Your Maui Vacation

September 22nd, 2008 by Palaka

Every Maui vacation is memorable, but certain activities on the Garden Isle make a Maui vacation a spectacular, memorable experience. If you are planning a vacation to Maui, try out these must-see activities during your visit.

1. Snorkeling at Molokini

Molokini is a small, crescent-shaped island off the coast of Maui. This now inactive volcano top is home to a plethora of marine animals and birds. It is heralded as one of the best snorkeling sites in all of Hawaii.

2. Watch the Sunrise from the Top of Haleakala

Haleakala is another inactive volcano on Maui. Early risers will relish in hiking to the top of the volcano to watch the breathtaking sunrise from the rim. For less adventurous visitors, Haleakala also offers summit access via car.

The drive to the top offers beautiful and unique vista views and is enjoyable in itself. The temperature at the summit is considerably lower than on the beach. In fact, you may even find snow once you reach the top, so dress warmly or at least bring a jacket.

3. Visit Haleakala National Park

On your way back down from the summit of Haleakala, you can visit the Haleakala National Park (http://www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm ). The park features endangered species of plants and animals found nowhere else in Hawaii. You may visit the cinder desert, lush rainforest coastal area, or the wilderness area that is perfect for day hiking.

4. Take a Helicopter Tour

A helicopter tour of Maui is a once in a lifetime experience. The views seen from the air over Maui are uniquely gorgeous. Booking a helicopter tour is very expensive, but well worth the money. Viewing Maui from the air provides a new perspective on the natural beauty and matchless tropical paradise setting of the island.

5. Go Whale Watching

If you visit Maui between November and April, you will not want to miss whale watching. You can sometimes spot whales from the beach, but the best way to get a good view is from the deck of a whale watching boat.

These tours are available from a variety of companies. Pacific Whale Foundation Eco Adventures is a very popular choice for whale watching tours. You can visit their website for more information (http://mauiecocruises.com/).

6. Attend a Maui Luau

A Maui luau is the epitome of a Hawaiian vacation for many visitors. The luau is a traditional Hawaiian celebration featuring a feast of Hawaiian cuisine often including roast pig. Entertainment, such as hula dancing, is also often presented at Maui luaus.

The luau celebration got its name from the taro root tops, called luau, that are served at the celebration. A Maui luau is a great way to immerse yourself in traditional Hawaiian culture.

These six must-see activities for your Maui vacation would not be complete without a little local shopping and a lot of relaxing in the sand and frolicking in the surf. Including these activities in your Maui vacation ensures a memorable and fun-filled trip.
