See the Seahorses of Kona

December 21st, 2007 by

There are lots of things to do in Hawaii, but if you’re visiting the Kona region, why not try something a little different? Scuba diving is an essential part of any Kona vacation, but despite the teeming reefs, there are some shy aquatic creatures which it’s difficult to get close to that way.

At the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm you can meet some of these fascinating creatures in surroundings which closely resemble their natural environment but which let you get closer than ever before.

The Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm is a working farm which sells seahorses to aquarium enthusiasts all over the world. For this reason, it’s best to visit in the afternoon, when the work schedule there is less hectic. Hour-long guided tours are available, during which you can learn all about the seahorses, their natural history in Hawaii’s sheltered waters, and their fascinating habits.

Did you know that male seahorses get pregnant? Or that the Japanese used to think they were demons? Children are welcome on the tours and will be intrigued by these strange yet gentle creatures. Visitors are even permitted to touch and feed them.

The seahorse farm is situated close to some excellent beaches for snorkeling, scuba diving and relaxing. The Kona coast is a superb place to discover the life of the sea, with crystal clear waters providing an excellent view. Your Kona vacation won’t be complete without a dive. Local guides are available to show you around the reef and introduce you to some of its more sociable inhabitants, though it’s important to be careful, as delicate corals can easily be damaged.

Don’t take souvenirs – shells and pieces of coral which have been washed up on the beach can be purchased cheaply from island shops without depleting the island’s natural riches. When you see the beautiful Kona seahorses you’ll understand why preserving this environment is so important, and you’ll be looking forward to visiting it again.
