Hawaiian Gardens and Landscapes: A Taste of Paradise

February 11th, 2008 by

Many gardening enthusiasts seek to recreate traditional Hawaiian gardens and landscapes in the mainland U.S. – and for good reason. Hawaii gardens and landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful. Some enjoy the exotic beauty at face value while others seek out cherished memories of a trip to Hawaii among the lush vegetation.

Hawaiian gardens and landscapes often contain native plants such as orchids, anthuriums, proteas, bromeliads, exotic palms, dracaena, Norfolk Island pine, and lotus Other common plants are the taro, kiawe trees, bougainvillea, breadfruit trees, tree ferns, Ohi’a-lehua trees, and the expected hibiscus.

Bamboo, begonias, Ti trees grown form stem cuttings, pili grass , wauke, macadamia nut trees, coffee plants, and cacao plants are also interspersed among Hawaiian landscapes, offering a grounded yet tropical feel.

Traditional Hawaiian plants such as palms, banana leaves, and pineapple plants are often featured in traditional Hawaiian landscapes as well. Supporting soils often consist of native organic elements like volcanic cinders, coconut hulls, and bark chips.

Many Hawaiian gardens have multi-cultural influences and indigenous plants grow alongside imported ones. Hawaiian landscapes are a unique mixture of the exotic and the ordinary. Brilliantly colored flowering plants intermingle with functional plants such as the Ti tree and taro. Mango, guava, coconut, bananas, and palm trees are staples in most Hawaiian gardens.

A palpable Asian influence is often seen in Hawaiian gardens and landscapes. Coy fish ponds, water features, and a respect and reverence for nature are found in both backyards and state parks in this beautiful tropical paradise. The common denominator is natural beauty.

Lush greens are abundant and water is usually nearby,-either in the form of a waterfall or landscaping pond, or the backdrop of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. This element is recreated by using landscaping expertise to conjure up plummeting waterfalls and vegetation-lined ponds.

Keeping in tradition with the laid-back and friendly atmosphere of the Hawaiian people, ornamental grasses and creeping vines are pruned less and the general structure of the landscape is more natural yet well cared for.

The exotic and relaxing properties of nature combine together in classic Hawaiian style to provide countless hours of enjoyment and relaxation. Hawaiian gardens and landscapes are a central attraction for many Hawaiian visitors.

The natural exotic beauty leaves a lasting and powerful impression. This natural beauty is part of the very core of the Hawaiian cultural and the magnetic appeal of Hawaii.
