Discover Hawaii’s Ancient Capital

The islands of Hawaii. Sun, sea and sand. Just what you’ll be looking forward to after a long, hard year of work. Hawaii is many people’s dream vacation spot - but if you have the energy for it, there’s much more to do there than simply relax on the beach.
Whilst most visitors to Hawaii center their activities around Honolulu, there’s a lot to be said for taking a trip to the north western coast of the island and exploring the city of Kona. Indeed, there’s so much to do on a Kona vacation that you may not feel the need to go anywhere else!
This elegant city, with its handsome architecture overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Kailua-Kona bay, was the first capital of the islands, founded when King Kamehameha I brought all their disparate governments together under his rule. Though the center of government later moved, Kona remained a royal retreat, and generations of monarchs lavished their affection upon it. The result was a legacy of beautiful buildings, monuments and art which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.
The principal industry in Kona today is fishing, though locals can recall the city’s ancient reputation as a center for breeding fancy fish, and the beautiful royal fish ponds remain a popular attraction. Because this is a working city rather than one focused principally around the tourist industry, it presents visitors with the chance to discover much more about the realities of Hawaiian life. But a Kona vacation doesn’t mean having to rough it.
There are plenty comfortable condos available here and local restaurants serve excellent examples of traditional island cuisine. Hawaiians have always been famous for their open, welcoming attitude, and Kona is no different. Visiting here means you’ll have the opportunity to explore the secrets of a fascinating ancient culture without giving up the pleasures which modern Hawaii has to offer.
